About Rob Shore and Senior Tech Tutor Marin: Stories from a Marin County Tech Tutor

I’m Rob Shore.

I’m not a big corporation, and I’m not a distant voice in a call center halfway across the world.

I’m your neighbor here in Marin County, and this is part of what I do after leaving the formal work-a-day world behind after 50 years.

I’m committed to patient, affordable, and jargon-free help with Apple devices for older adults.

Since 2025, I’ve been sitting at kitchen tables from Sausalito to Novato, helping people get their devices to actually behave.

Technology is supposed to make our lives easier, but let’s be honest: half the time, it just makes us want to throw our iPhones out the window.

Whether you’re trying to see photos of your grandkids, pay a bill without getting locked out, or just figure out why your phone keeps making that weird noise, I’m here to help you get through it without the headache.

I wanted to share a few stories from my recent visits.

You might find that the “tech problems” you’re having are the exact same ones your neighbors are facing.

The “Simple” Stuff That Isn’t Actually Simple

Companies like Apple and Google love to say their products are “intuitive.”

That’s easy to say when you’re 22 and grew up with a smartphone in your hand.

But for the rest of us, things like moving a file into a folder on a MacBook or adding a contact to WhatsApp can feel like trying to solve a puzzle in the dark.

In the last few months, I’ve helped neighbors with things that the “geniuses” at the store often overlook:

  • Organizing the Mess: We’ve cleaned up cluttered desktops and moved files so you can actually find that document you saved three days ago.
  • Making it Readable: I’ve set up screen transcription and accessibility features so you don’t have to squint at tiny text or struggle to hear what’s being said.
  • Getting Around: We’ve walked through how to search for apps on an iPhone and how to remove those annoying icons from your MacBook “Dock” that you never use.

These might seem like small tasks to some, but they are the difference between feeling in control of your computer and feeling like the computer is winning.

Winning the War Against “Two-Factor Authentication”

We’ve all been there.

You just want to check your Verizon bill or pay your Target credit card, and suddenly the website demands a “six-digit code” sent to your phone.

If you don’t catch it in 60 seconds, you’re locked out. It’s a nightmare.

Recently, I worked with a client named Peg. She was stuck in a loop with her banking. The security was so tight she couldn’t even get in to pay her bills.

On top of that, her inbox was overflowing. We sat down and cleared out 14,000 unread emails (yes, 14,000!).

We unsubscribed from the junk and set up a system so she could receive those security codes and enter them with confidence.

Technology shouldn’t be a wall between you and your own money. I help you tear that wall down so you can stay independent and organized.

Tech and Your Health: More Than Just Gadgets

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is helping people use their tech to stay healthy. I’ve spent a lot of time lately helping clients with the “human” side of their devices:

  • Syncing Hearing Aids: Did you know your iPhone can connect directly to your hearing aids? We’ve set that up for several clients, making phone calls and videos crystal clear again.
  • Heart Rate Monitoring: We’ve set up the Health app and heart rate monitors so you can keep an eye on your stats without needing a degree in data science.
  • The “Million Miler” Lifestyle: For my frequent travelers, we make sure Uber, Google Maps, and your airline apps are ready to go. Whether you’re heading to the airport or just navigating a new part of town, your tech should be a tool, not a hindrance.

Patience When Things Get Difficult

Sometimes, the tech problems are more than just a forgotten password. I’ve worked with families where a loved one is dealing with memory loss or the early stages of dementia. In those cases, “tech support” isn’t about the newest features—it’s about patience.

I worked with one client, Corrine, who was struggling to remember her short-term tasks. We didn’t just fix her Mac; we wrote down instructions in a way that made sense for her.

We set up a recurring, weekly visit to ensure that even if she forgot a step, I would be there to walk through it again.

Whether it’s a broken keyboard or a confusing iCloud account, I’m there to be a steady hand.

Why Call a Local Tech Tutor?

If you’ve ever tried to call a corporate “help desk,” you know you usually end up waiting on hold just to talk to someone who uses words you may not understand. I do things differently because I live right here in the community.

  1. I come to you: We work in your home (or meet at the library), on your WiFi, with your actual devices.
  2. I speak human, not “Tech”: I won’t talk about “cloud architecture.” I’ll show you how to send a photo to your son-in-law or how to use Siri to make a hands-free phone call.
  3. No “Stupid” Questions: If we need to spend an hour learning how to use a mouse or how to “copy and paste,” that is exactly what we will do.
