California’s New DROP Portal is Here

It’s the bane of most seniors’ digital life: SPAM.

You’ve likely noticed a frustrating trend over the last few years: your phone won’t stop ringing with spam calls, your inbox is a graveyard of junk email, and your physical mailbox is stuffed with “pre-approved” offers you never asked for.

For many seniors, this isn’t just an annoyance, it’s a constant security risk.

Until recently, stopping this deluge felt impossible. You could block one number, but three more would take its place.

That is because the problem isn’t the individual caller; it’s the data brokers behind the scenes who are buying and selling your personal information.

Fortunately, California has just launched a first-of-its-kind tool to fight back. It’s called DROP (the Delete Request and Opt-out Platform), and it is the most powerful weapon yet in the fight for digital privacy.

And, best of all, it is FREE to use.

What is DROP?

Launched on January 1, 2026, by the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA), DROP is the centerpiece of the California Delete Act (SB 362).

Think of it as a universal unsubscribe button for your entire digital life.

Under previous laws, if you wanted a company to delete your data, you had to find their website, hunt for a privacy link, and submit a request manually.

Considering there are over 500 registered data brokers in California, doing this for every company would be a full-time job.

DROP changes the equation.

It is a secure, state-managed website that allows you to submit one single request that is then transmitted to every registered data broker in the state. By law, these brokers must then find your information and delete it from their systems.

The Silent Middlemen: Understanding Data Brokers

Most of us are familiar with companies like Google or Amazon, where we have accounts. Data brokers are different.

These are companies you likely have no direct relationship with. They work in the shadows, quietly collecting, combining, and analyzing data from public records, social media, and retail loyalty programs.

They build profiles on you that include your:

  • Full name and aliases

  • Home address and past residences

  • Phone numbers and email addresses

  • Estimated income and credit worthiness

  • Political leanings and health interests

These profiles are then sold to marketers, insurance companies, and scammers.

Why Seniors Should Use DROP

While everyone can benefit from more privacy, the stakes are significantly higher for seniors.

According to the California Privacy Protection Agency and consumer advocates, seniors are primary targets for high-tech fraud and identity theft.

1. Stopping the Scam Pipeline: Scammers don’t pick numbers at random. They buy lists.

By using DROP to scrub your data from broker databases, you are effectively taking your name off the prospect lists that scammers use to find victims for Medicare fraud, social engineering, and AI-powered voice impersonation scams.

2. Reducing Decision Fatigue: The sheer volume of spam calls and texts can be overwhelming.

When your phone rings ten times a day with junk, it’s easy to accidentally pick up a malicious call or miss an important one from a doctor. By drying up the source of the data, DROP helps quiet the noise.

3. Safety for the Whole Family: One of the best features of the DROP portal is that it allows for authorized agents.

If a senior isn’t comfortable navigating the website themselves, a trusted family member or caregiver can assist with the request. This ensures that the most vulnerable members of our community are protected without needing to be tech experts.

How Easy Is It to Sign Up?

One of the most impressive things about the DROP portal is its simplicity. The entire process takes less than ten minutes.

Here is the step-by-step breakdown:

  • Verify Your Residency: Since this is a benefit for Californians, the first step is proving you live here. You can do this quickly through the California Identity Gateway or by using a Login.gov account (the same one used for Social Security or TSA PreCheck).

  • Provide Your Info: You’ll be asked to provide basic identifiers like your name, date of birth, and email. IMPORTANT: The more information you provide, the better. If you give the portal your old phone numbers or former maiden names, data brokers have a much better chance of finding and purging every version of you in their system.

  • Submit: Once you hit submit, your work is done. You will receive a DROP ID” that you should save for your records. Hang on to this DROP ID to make any changes to your DROP profile at a later date.

Senior Tech Tutor Tip: One of the most effective features of the DROP form is the ability to add multiple email addresses and multiple phone numbers in the same session.

If you’ve had the same landline for 30 years but recently switched to a mobile, or if you use two different emails, add them all!

The more identifiers you provide, the harder it is for a data broker to claim they “couldn’t find” your file.

What Happens Next? (The Extra Info You Need to Know)

It is important to understand that your data won’t vanish the second you click the button. The law provides a clear timeline for how this works:

  • August 1, 2026: This is the go-live date for enforcement. While you can sign up now, data brokers are legally required to begin processing these requests starting in August 2026.

  • The 45-Day Cycle: This isn’t just a one-time fix. Under the Delete Act, data brokers must check the DROP portal every 45 days to see if new people have signed up. Once you are on the list, they are required to keep your data deleted on an ongoing basis.

  • Exemptions: Note that DROP won’t delete public records like real estate deeds or voter registration files, as those are handled by different government branches. It also won’t delete information that a company needs to keep for legal reasons (like tax records).

The Bottom Line

California is currently the only state in the nation with a tool this powerful. By using DROP, you aren’t just cleaning up your digital footprint—you are exercising a fundamental right to privacy that was won through years of legislative effort.

Whether you’re looking to protect your retirement savings from fraudsters or simply want to enjoy a dinner without your phone ringing off the hook, DROP is the solution.

It’s free, it’s fast, and it’s your right.
