In Sweden, there is a beloved concept called d\u00f6st\u00e4dning\u2014or \u201cdeath cleaning.\u201d It\u2019s the thoughtful practice of organizing and decluttering your home later in life so your family isn’t left sorting through an attic or crawl space full of old tax files, mismatched china, and unlabelled photo albums.<\/p>\n

In Marin, our version of that diligence often starts in an attorney\u2019s office. Here, estate planning is practically a competitive sport.<\/p>\n

With median home values easily surpassing California\u2019s statutory probate threshold, local residents are remarkably thorough. Living trusts are funded, real estate deeds are properly recorded, and advance healthcare directives sit neatly inside fireproof safes. We spend considerable time and legal expense ensuring our physical and financial assets transition smoothly to the people and charities we love.<\/p>\n

Yet almost none of that paperwork accounts for our newest, most chaotic potential mess: the one locked behind a four- or six-digit iPhone passcode.<\/p>\n

Every week, I sit at kitchen tables with Senior Tech Tutor Marin clients who have organized practically every detail of their lives. But when I ask, \u201cIf something happened to you tomorrow, who can get into your iPad to download thirty years of family photos?\u201d or \u201cWho is going to shut down your Facebook profile so friends don’t get automated birthday reminders next year?\u201d the room usually goes quiet.<\/p>\n

The hard truth is that Big Tech does not care about your California living trust. Handing an executor a notarized binder does not compel Apple, Google, or Meta to unlock an account. In fact, federal privacy laws and corporate terms of service strictly prohibit them from handing over passwords. Without pre-planning, grieving families often face lengthy legal dead ends just to recover digital memories or turn off recurring charges.<\/p>\n

Planning a digital legacy comes down to managing two distinct layers: your digital infrastructure<\/strong> (the keys to the house) and your public presence<\/strong> (your community footprint).<\/p>\n

Here is how to bring both into balance:<\/p>\n

1. The Infrastructure: Apple and Google<\/h4>\n

Your smartphone and primary email are the modern equivalent of a master key. If family members are locked out of these, settling affairs becomes exponentially harder.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Set up an Apple Legacy Contact:<\/strong> If you use an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, Apple has a built-in feature designed specifically for this. It allows you to designate a trusted person\u2014such as a spouse or adult child\u2014who can access your photos, notes, emails, contacts, and device backups after you pass away. Apple provides you with an access key to give them. When the time comes, they submit that key alongside a death certificate, and Apple grants access without needing your passcode.<\/p>\n

(To set this up, go to Settings > Tap your name at the top > Sign-In & Security > Legacy Contact).<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2022 Turn on Google\u2019s Digital Legacy tool:<\/strong> For anyone using Gmail, Google Photos, or Google Drive, Google lets you decide what happens to your digital assets if you stop using your account. If your account sits inactive for a set period (the default is 3 months), Google will automatically alert your designated contacts and send them a secure link to download archives of the records you chose to share\u2014such as family photos, documents, or emails.<\/p>\n

(To set this up on your computer or tablet: Go to <\/em>myaccount.google.com\/inactive<\/a> > Click Add data recipient to designate up to 10 trusted people and select which data they can download > Under When this will happen, adjust your inactivity timeframe if you prefer longer than 3 months).<\/em><\/p>\n

2. The Public Presence: Social Media<\/h4>\n

When someone passes, their social accounts don\u2019t simply fade away. Without instructions, they become digital ghosts that can invite identity theft or cause unnecessary pain to friends.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Memorialize Meta (Facebook and Instagram):<\/strong> Left unattended, an inactive Facebook account can languish or be compromised by scammers. Worse, it will continue pinging friends with automated reminders to wish you a happy birthday. Meta allows you to name a Legacy Contact in advance. That person can write a pinned post (such as memorial service arrangements), update your profile picture, and respond to tributes, but they cannot read your private direct messages. Alternatively, you can choose to have your account permanently deleted once Meta is notified of your passing.<\/p>\n

(To set this up on Facebook: Open Settings, type \u201cMemorialization\u201d into the search bar at the top, and tap the result to choose a legacy contact or request account deletion).<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2022 The Nextdoor and Twitter (X) Problem:<\/strong> Platforms like Nextdoor and X do not offer legacy contact features. If an account is left open on Nextdoor, your profile remains tethered to your local neighborhood grid indefinitely. In both cases, the only way a family member can close the account after the fact is by submitting a formal support ticket with death certificates and identity verification.<\/p>\n

A Common-Sense Checklist for You and Your Family<\/h4>\n

Beyond the tech settings, someone you trust needs simple day-one access. You don\u2019t need to write down every password for every website you\u2019ve ever browsed, but a spouse or adult child needs three essential things:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Your screen unlock codes: The four- or six-digit PINs you punch in every day to unlock your iPhone, iPad, and computer. Without those numbers, the hardware is just an expensive paperweight.<\/p>\n

\u2022 The master key: If you use an Apple Passwords list, 1Password, or even that trusted notebook in the desk drawer, make sure your family knows where it lives.<\/p>\n

\u2022 The golden rule of cell phones: Tell your loved ones not to cancel your mobile phone carrier right away. Almost every modern website sends security verification codes via text message. If that phone number is disconnected during the first week, getting into essential accounts to handle bills or notifications becomes an unnecessary, stressful roadblock.<\/p>\n

Taking twenty minutes this weekend to set up these digital safety nets is simply an act of kindness. It ensures decades of family photos, recipes, and memories aren’t permanently locked away, sparing the people you love a massive headache down the road.<\/p>\n
