update is an important performance and\/or security improvement.\u00a0<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"20\">To a senior in Marin, an update is a disruption.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"21\">This is the <b data-path-to-node=\"21\" data-index-in-node=\"12\">Convenience Paradox<\/b>: The more advanced our devices become, the more tenuous our mastery of them feels.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"21\">For an older adult who has carefully written down, &#8220;Step 1: Click the blue circle,&#8221; an update that changes that circle to a green square is sometimes an unnerving event.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"21\">It invalidates their notes, makes them question their memory, and their erodes their technology confidence.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"22\">The Apple device landscape is particularly guilty of this.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"22\">iOS updates often change the gestures required to navigate.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"22\">Suddenly, swiping up does something different than it did yesterday.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"22\">This state of perpetual newness that we face can be exhausting!<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"22\">After all, in so many other areas of life once you learn the interface it remains consistent for years (eg. your car, toaster, or washing machine) not months.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"22\">In tech, the interface is seemingly written in sand.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"23\">With my senior clients I work on building &#8220;flexible mental models&#8221;; learning to look for <i data-path-to-node=\"23\" data-index-in-node=\"180\">icons<\/i> (like the gear for settings or the magnifying glass for search) rather than memorizing <i data-path-to-node=\"23\" data-index-in-node=\"273\">positions<\/i>.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"23\">Sadly, the burden will always be on the user of the technology.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"23\">And at Senior Tech Tutor
