Unless you are new to this blog (welcome, by the way) you have already noticed that I am a professional speaker, among other things. And, like any business person, I like my phone to ring – especially when it’s a lead.
Friday I got the following message via Google Voice: ”Good afternoon, Rob, My name is Ulysses and I’m looking to work with a professional speaker. I can be reached at 888-860-4470 extension 725. I look forward to speaking to you soon bye-bye.”
As soon as I heard the message my bullshit detector started to go off.
It was odd that he left no company name.
It was odd that he mentioned nothing about a group, association, conference, or any ‘referred by’ information.
Immediately I Googled the phone number and discovered that it was from a company called Leapfish and, according the their site, they are: a multi-dimensional search aggregator that retrieves results from several of the top search portals, including Google, Yahoo, Live Search, Blogs, Videos, Shopping and other popular search engines.
At this point I should mention that as cynical as I can be, I really do like to give folks the benefit of the doubt – that and I certainly don’t want to miss a business opportunity.
Under the category of ‘long shot’ I thought, “Perhaps the company is having a sales meeting and needs a speaker”.
Then that nagging bullshit detector went off again.
But I called Ulysses back.
Sure enough, as I heard the drone of a busy phone room buzzing in the background, Ulysses explained that he was calling to see if I wanted to secure a top three spot for the search term “professional speaker”.
I explained to him that calling under the pretext of inquiring about ‘working with a speaker’ is deceptive and a poor way to interest me in ad placement.
At this point he told me that the placement was not pay per click but should be thought of as “an investment”.
What?
It was at this point I asked to speak to his boss.
Brian came on the line and apologized and explained that Leapfish had no interest in deceptive sale practices because “their numbers were growing every month”.
Gee, thanks Brian.
Attention sleazy sales people: there is only one surefire way to sell.
It is the upfront, honest, put your cards on the table approach.
Virtually any other method cheapens you, your product, your brand, and will ultimately result in more relationship harm than good.

Rob, thanks for sharing this information. I am surprised that one of their blowhards PR is not here to claim to you misrepresents the facts.
It is only matter of time before Google shuts their API on LeapFish- behaving like this they only make Google (and other search engines) look stupid.
I have shared your post with friends, hopefully other people will avoid falling for this “investement”.

I appreciate it much more when people are upfront from the very beginning. My BS detector goes off too when I get these types of calls (that and sometimes I answer the phone directly the first time)… I’m polite but of course I don’t appreciate their approach.

I received a call from Leapfish last week and it sounded… in a word, fishy… I’m glad to see that my google search resulted in your blog post. I received a call yesterday and got the one hour pitch as well. I told the sales guy (JP) to call me back today b/c I needed to talk it over with my biz partner. I thought the idea was great. Then…I started reading! I could not find one good word!
I called him back to ask a few more questions. How many hits does the site get? Was told the CEO does not disclose this information. HMMM…Wonder Why?
He also told me their “big launch” was this week so I asked what the marketing plan was. I was told viral? Seriously? Is that a marketing plan? I can do that all day long and yes it drives business in, but not what is needed! I am sooooo glad there were several sites like this with great information. I found this blog to be the best!!
Sad thing is many have already been taken by the scam I’m sure! One of which is a consultant of mine!
Can’t wait to see all the media exposure next week after their launch from the media….

I received a call from Mario(sales rep) yesterday- took up over 45 minutes of my time to just tell him “NO-THANKS!” and even left him on eternal hold for an additional 10 minutes and then called 5 more times after! I am very relieved to see that there are sites about many of these scams-man, who trains these guys? Oh yea, I am waiting for the big media launch today????
Thank you for blasting these damn scammers! I just received a bogus call from a “Marie” and within the first 10 seconds of her intro, a red flag went up and I immediately sensed “SCAM”, so I proceeded to rush her off the phone by requesting more info via email (which I knew she wasn’t gonna send me anything), she had the nerve to say “can you first tell me are you interested or not because I don’t want YOU to waste my time”. Huh? I politely ended the call with “no thanks” and hung up before she could say “bye-bye”.
