Is Stress Messing With Your Head?

by Rob on October 15, 2008

The last few weeks have been quite the roller coaster ride.

Every day there is another piece of news that sends folks into pronounced highs or lows. The stress of this assault of information about our economy, the election, our savings and our livelihoods can take its toll.

Along with that stress comes the acknowledgment that you might not be in the best mind to make decisions.

In fact science has shown that during times of great stress you are subject to the following issues regarding your ability to make decisions:

We tend to become fixated, or pre-occupied, with ideas – even if they are dated and proven to be ineffective. New ideas are rejected because we are overwhelmed or stressed. It is easier to fall back on the old way versus trying new approaches

Concentration becomes impaired. The volume on the internal noise in our heads goes up. Ever try to sink your brain into a complex topic in a distracting environment like studying in a noisy room? Fear and stress make us more sensitive to the distractions.

If we are not mindful we can fall into negative self evaluations because stress can affect our self esteem and self confidence.

Our ability to be creative becomes reduced. We seem to see fewer alternatives. This might cause us to reduce brainstorming to find appropriate solutions to problems.

Times of high stress and fear can be catalysts for memorability and, if dealt with in the right manner, will actually increase your MQ.

The first step is to realize that what you might be feeling is not unique to you – it is a human and scientific reaction.

As a public service I also provide to you a handy stress reduction kit:

Directions:
1. Place kit on FIRM surface.
2. Follow directions in circle of kit.
3. Repeat step 2 as necessary, or until unconscious.
4. If unconscious, cease stress reduction activity.
